Giving a gift of fragrance is an exciting thing to do for many people. The range of choices is so great, it is both fun and challenging to select the most appropriate scent for the lucky recipient. If you are going to be giving a man perfume, there are a number of factors to keep in mind as you shop so you can make the best selection.

Perhaps the first consideration is the personality of the recipient. If he is more of a traditional or conservative type, a fragrance that reflects these qualities may be indicated. On the other hand, a very outgoing and adventurous scent may be appropriate for someone with a very buoyant or even avant garde nature.

Your relationship with the intended recipient may also be a factor in your choice. You may be inclined to be more creative in your selection for someone you know intimately, such as a boyfriend or your husband. Conversely, a different sort of scent may be more appropriate for your father or other family member.

Another consideration is when you think the person will want to wear the scent. Some fragrances are most appropriate for daytime wear, as in going to the office or for casual wear. On the other hand, a scent that he will wear in the evening, when going out or for romantic occasions, may be quite different.

Fragrances fall into several major classifications with regard to type of scent. These include citrus, green, oriental and others with distinctive ingredients. You may decide to select a fragrance that is of the type the person already uses, or you may want to be daring and choose something quite different if you think it would be appropriate.

When you have chosen the scent, there remains the decision of what strength to get. Usually there will be several choices in this area, based on the concentration of the essential oils in relation to the alcohol content. The more intense and longer lasting fragrances are more expensive but generally are used more sparingly than the lighter varieties.

At the fragrance counter, try not to become overwhelmed with the selections by testing too many at once. A better method would be to have several possible scents sprayed on tester strips, which you can take away and smell later when the fragrance has had a chance to develop. This way, when you give a man perfume, you will have made the best possible choice.
